Begun in 1967 as The Johnston
County Room of the public library, the Johnston County Heritage Center has become known as
one of the best equipped facilities in the country for studying local history and
genealogy. A great variety of public records, private manuscripts, photographs, family
histories, old newspapers, and artifacts have been assembled in commodious quarters to
allow scholars, amateur historians, and genealogists alike to study the history and
culture of Johnston County and its people. |

Sat. from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Free Admission, wheelchair accessible, free
parking. Located in downtown Smithfield, across from the Johnston County Courthouse.
Courthouse was built in 1922 and features Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnam Veteran
War Memorials. Note the Frank Creech sculpture, 7he Reader, donated to
the Johnston County library by the Elmer WeDons family. |
